Free Marketing Course Update – The Squidoo Experience!

For those of you who have taken up the free marketing course with me, you will probably want to know how the example lens is doing and I have some updates for you.  For those of you who have not yet signed up, I’m not pass-wording this post so that you can see how we are doing and hopefully join in with the fun.

Most weekends I don’t normally work at all, I might check my emails once or twice but that’s about it.  Today though I was really pleased by what I saw and wanted to share it with you – I hope that you can then take away the steps that we have already covered in the course and add them to your own marketing efforts.

In part three we spoke about Squidoo and how we were going to use this to act as our landing page (a one page website if you like for your potential customers to come to) and I showed you the example I made for the sake of the course – A Squidoo lens showing you how to make money with Squidoo.

Now this lens is VERY basic and will need to be worked on.  I made mistakes on it with the url and several other spelling and grammatical errors along with content that will need to be refined.  The lens itself though has shown some rather unexpected results already and that is what I wanted to share with you.

Squidoo Lenses That Get Ranked

This lens was published three days ago and has made a MAJOR jump in the Squidoo ranks.  After starting out (when published with the green tick) sitting at 395,000 or there abouts with a rank of 1200 in the SEO category, today when I logged in, the lens had jumped to 1,095 and sits at 51 in SEO category.  Now I am the first person to say NEVER get hooked on where your lens is in the Squidoo ranks.  We don’t want to target the people using Squidoo, we want to use the lens to get into the search engines.  BUT, on the other hand, a good Squidoo rating wont hurt your lens and search engines seem more inclined to list lenses that have a good rating.

On looking at the traffic, most of it is coming from here which is cheating a little, and there is around 25 visits referred from Squidoo itself and another 15 from Digg.  All in all, this has happened without any outside traffic so you wont be able to see any ‘genuine’ results yet. 

The reason that this is good news for you guys is this.  When we start to promote the lens, on Monday, you will be able to see first hand how getting exposure will help your lens.  This has happened by getting 200 people (a lot less than I thought would go there 🙁 ) to go to the lens.  Once we start to increase this number you will be able to watch the lens take off and HOPEFULLY get into the search engines within a week or so – fingers crossed.

With this in mind, I have decided to build another example lens on how to get a Squidoo lens in Google, again this is a basic lens that we will work with to produce results.  This is a lot harder to get working with because of the competition for the keywords that I am using – there are over 50,000 results for the keyword so this should prove a little harder to get working for us.

    Hey, I am so excited, Kelly, I have been following your advice from your Squidoo Queen manual and my lens that I created a long time ago shot up to the 3000 range in the stats. I am so excited and all I did was add more content every few days as you suggest.
    Could you PLEASE send me a link to how I can put an opt-in box into my lens since I couldn’t quite figure that out from the manual? I have had 100+ visitors that I could have had on a LIST as you suggest. Can’t wait to start a list from this lens! 🙂 Thanks to you!!!!!!

    Hello Kelly,

    Just wanted to let you know that for some reason after the first part of the course for some reason I stopped receiving notifications about the course and had to actually sign up again to get the information I missed. So I am going to have to do a little catching up to get caught up to whaere you are at now. I will try to get that done this weekend. I only found out you had posted parts two and three after going back to my notification about part one.

    I very much respect that you are willing to provide a live demonstration of the techniques you teach. In doing this you’re offering readers a clear indication that this is good sound and practical advice which you stand behind. I have recently purchased your book, Squidoo Queen, and an finding the same applies to the materials you have in the book. It’s direct honest and without the kind of hype which is all to common in other books. I’m sure that many people who might otherwise fail at internet marketers will find success by simply following your guidance.

    What? People have made sales already?

    How did they do that? I have only had 28 people view my lens so far and haven’t even earned 1c from the anybody clicking on the google ads or anything. In fact I only have tumbleweed drifting across mine.

    LOL, I’m jealous but very happy for the people who have made the sales. Well done to all concerned.

    I just have to work harder for my sales.

    Congratulations on the lens’s upward movement..always good to hear good news.

    The only bone I have to pick..and it’s one of those tiny ones..not a big thighbone.. is that any lens that YOU Kelly create will have an advantage over any of ours due to the fact that people reading this blog / your emails / your course will automatically go and visit it thus generating driven traffic (ok it was only 200 people..but that’s a start! :-)) )

    To get round that perhaps those remaining on the course, once finished, could publish their lens URL on this blog so everyone gets looked at by everyone else.. a little like social marking. Would that be acceptable?
