Improve Your Social Marketing

There is always something that you should be doing to improve your marketing efforts – social marketing is certainly something that you should be including in your daily/weekly plan and here are 5 things that you can do right now to improve your social marketing efforts.

1.  Know What You Want From Your Social Media Marketing

Why are you using social media sites?  What do you want to happen?  Before you run off and begin Tweeting or posting on your wall make sure that you know what your goals are.

Do you want to build a following, send traffic to your site or increase your sales?  It’s vital that you know what your aim is before you begin or your efforts will be as effective as throwing mud at a wall and hoping that some sticks!

Take ten minutes and work out where you want to be and how you intend to get there via social media marketing.

2.  You’re Sharing Too Much Of Your Life

Whilst you should make sure that your personality shines through, no one will want to hear about your personal hobbies especially when they have the potential to damage your business.

You are building your business and your brand and you need to keep it separate from your personal life.  The odd reference to your personal thoughts and home life is great as it connects you as a person BUT always be cautious about what you do share with the rest of the world.

3.  Not Sharing Enough Of You

Making sure that you only share the right kind of information is a balancing act.  You don’t want to come across as someone who is just interested in the sale but you also need to make sure you don’t fall into point 2 from above!

People buy from people so make sure that they can see you are a real person just like them.  Always have a photo on social media sites so that people find it easier to connect with you.  Take the time to complete your profile too, just adding a little personal information can make all the difference.

4.  Balance Your Eagerness & Laziness

Lots of things come down to balance and getting the right balance with your posts, tweets etc is critical – get it wrong and you’re either not doing enough or your spamming.

One thing that I hear all the time is “social media marketing doesn’t work” and then you find out that they don’t even Tweet their own posts, don’t have a Facebook page!  To be honest, these are the minimum requirements for anyone wanting to see results from their social marketing efforts.

Make a plan of posts, tweets etc that you want to make – make sure that you get the right balance of professional/personal ones – and stick to it!  You need to be acting on it daily and then analysing your results.

5.  Engage With Other Users To Build Relationships

There’s a reason that this is called Social Media Marketing – they are social sites that require you to be social!  Just by interacting with other people you’ll find that they’ll want to do the same – before you know it you have a whole community online that is interested in what you have to say!

Try taking the time to reply to others, share THEIR posts and leave helpful comments.  Include this in your daily plan of action and the results will speak for themselves – go on, see what happens 🙂

Bonus Tips!

Always make sure that you keep your profiles/posts etc professional looking, clean and uncluttered.

If you’re also working a job whilst growing your online one ALWAYS assume that friends and fellow workers can find you, especially if you use your real name, which is exactly what happened to a Walmart worker who got fired when his controversial Facebook posts were brought to his employer’s attention.

New platforms can often be a learning curve when it comes to using them in the right way.  It’s important to fully understand them before you start using them or you could end up making a mess of things like Google employee Steve Yegge who managed to share an internal memo with all his followers – this turned out to be pretty harsh reading for Google.

I think the problem with most people is that they spread themselves too thinly….either they have too many websites to promote or focus on too many social networks. In the end they only do everything in a mediocre fashion and never get the traction they would like. I am finding this a bit with pinterest. Everyone is going on about it as the next great traffic source but if you don’t create attractive imagery and engage in the pinterest community, you won’t get many click throughs to your sites.
