Heartbreaking Holiday Season Appeal

*** 3rd UPDATE ***

In total we raised $729.04!

WOW!

Such an amazing feeling to know that we made a REAL difference in this families life – YOU made a difference!  It’s so moving that I get lost for words just how much strangers can do for each other in times of need.

If you donated then please take this as a massive ‘Thank You’ – Nana, Ted and David have sent a thank you card to us all expressing their surprise and appreciation at such a special gift.

There has been several emails coming in asking if it is still okay to send in donations as people missed it or didn’t have enough funds at the time – it’s still okay to donate and any money that comes in from now on will be split between our family and the children’s ward at the hospital.

Others have asked if they can send hampers or gifts in so we sat down this morning and made a Wishlist on Amazon for those who want to actually buy a product (you can send gift cards too).

These go directly to Nana or Ted and you can find the Wishlist here ….

Amazon WishList

(The same still applies to the wishlist – let us know you sent it and get our goodies in return.)

You can keep donating here and an update will be made each week ….

The carpets have been fitted yesterday at Nana’s house and have really made a difference to their home – never have I seen a little boy so overjoyed at having a new carpet in his bedroom 🙂

Thank you once again for such an amazing response – we really are making a difference and it’s something that I am really proud of – let’s keep going!

Take care – Kelly

*** 2nd UPDATE ***

Thank you so much for your continued support – without the help and kindness of my readers this just wouldn’t have been possible.

At the time of writing this update, 14.10 (GMT) I can confirm that we have a grand total of $622.00!  We are so close to our target now and I know that we can reach it with your help.

Ted’s bike has been reserved and is awaiting collection on Saturday and the carpets have been picked and ordered but are unable to be fitted until the middle of December.

I’ve been so moved by everyone’s generosity and the stories that you have shared.  As the holiday season gets closer I know that our thoughts are with our own families and our own troubles – please spare a thought for Ted, David and Nana who are dealing with such awful times, I know that they appreciate it so much.

The latest update that I have from Nana is that David is still doing well and fighting.  He is still in a high dependency unit but his condition is now stable.  David will never be able to live a normal life again and at the moment the doctors are unsure as to the full extent of his injuries.  Ted has been having sessions to help him deal with the sudden loss of his parents but is still struggling with Davids situation.

PLEASE, Please, please.  If you can help this family and get us to our target with a donation – please do it today!

*** 1st UPDATE ***

Firstly I would like to thank everyone who took the time to donate, email well wishes and send their thoughts and best wishes – it really is a heart-warming experience when so many people show that even in their own times of need and hardship that they can show such kindness to strangers!

As of 13.13pm (GMT) today we have a total of $487.82 so we are more than half way there!

PLEASE, if you can donate even the smallest amount – it all counts and this family will be able to benefit so much from your act of kindness.

Even in their time of need ‘Nana’ took the time to get back to my calls over the weekend to make sure that I was okay!  When I explained what we were doing for her she reacted exactly how I thought she would act – She refused the help and told me that as nice as the offer was she simply couldn’t accept it!  I have to tell you that I actually got pretty worried that I’d be able to convince her to take our help.  Luckily though one of the other ladies that I work with, and who knows about our campaign, turned up at Nana’s house and explained everything to her.

Once she had time to get her head around what was happening she asked how she could possibly find the time to send out ‘thank you’ cards to everyone who had donated 🙂

It’s going to take some time to sink in but we think we’re on track with her now – the generosity of strangers seems to have taken her by surprise but I’ve been told that the look of relief that washed over her face was amazing – ‘it was almost like her back straightened just a little and some of the worry she has carried around with her had been lifted!’ was what I was told – that is EXACTLY why we’re doing this.

So please!  If you can help us out I have a bribe for you ….

** Original Post **

This journey started last year for me when my own Mother suffered a major bleed on her brain, not only did she spend more than twelve weeks in intensive care, for eight of them she was in a coma.  It was the worst time for my whole family as I am sure you can relate with.

As my family pulled together through this horrific ordeal we became aware of how many other families were suffering, some of them young children.  Watching how each family either came together or fell apart was one of the most heart breaking experiences of my life.  We decided there and then that we wanted to help these families where we could -you guys helped make that possible!

Together, we touched the lives of that family and helped them to have a Christmas that they were certainly not expecting to have.  Their struggle is not unique and what I found hardest to accept was the fact that the struggle that they found hardest should never have been allowed to happen – after all, this was not a 3rd world country that was being savaged by war, this was the UK with a free health care system, a benefits system with social care in place.  It failed them and it continues to fail to this day.

This year there are so many children that will spend the holiday season alone in hospital simply fighting for their life.

As they struggle so do their families and this year I want you to hear about the story of ‘Ted’ a seven year old boy who has lost his parents in a fatal car crash.  Not only has Ted lost his parents but his older brother is still in the hospital.  Ted is with his Nana who is all he has left.  They spend their days going to the hospital to spend time with ‘David’ as he starts his recovery.

Ted is not only dealing with the fact that his parents are gone and his brother will never be the same, he has to deal with the fact that this year, there will be no Christmas tree, no presents to open – all their money goes on travel.  Last week Ted went back to school, his Nana drops him off and then travels to the hospital to be with David.  At home time, Ted is met by his Nana and they make their way home for tea before making the journey together to the hospital once again.

Nana doesn’t moan, she’s devastated at her own loss but keeps going.  Next week Nana will be 68.  Ted doesn’t moan, he’s happy that David is slowly getting better.  David will not be able to much for himself ever again and will require around the clock care – his Nana is already trying to plan for that time.

This year I want to help Nana and Ted the best way we can.  Nana doesn’t want hand-outs and doesn’t feel sorry for herself all she ever wishes for is more time in the day to get things done.  I’ve been lucky enough to spend time with Nana and think that the best thing we could do would be to buy her a new carpet for both her bedrooms and get Ted a new bed – at the moment Ted is sleeping in Nana’s old bed whilst she is on a ‘put me up’.

I’d also love to be able to get Ted a travel pass and a bike for Christmas this year.  That way he would be able to ride is bike to and from school next year and the cost of getting to the hospital would be much less for Nana – in all, $700 is going to make the world of difference to this family and I know that we can do this together.  I’ve donated $200.00 and I hope that before the holiday season comes around that we can get the $500 to help this family.

Let me help make this easier for you too by giving YOU something back if you can help us with a donation …..
